Entering the City
requires a key

Iron & Velvet runs over raw Telnet. You'll need a client to get in. Here's everything you need — no technical degree required.

A MUD client is simply a program that connects you to our server over Telnet and makes the experience comfortable — colours, scrollback, keyboard history. Think of it as the neon-lit door that gets you into the alley.

Our honest recommendation for everyone who just wants to play: Mudlet. It runs on every system listed below, it's free, it looks great, and it gets out of your way. The rest are for the people who already know what they're doing.

host ironvelvet.duckdns.org
port 6666
protocol Telnet / plain TCP
// A note for first-timers After installing Mudlet, open it, click New, paste the host and port above, and hit Connect. That's it. You're in the rain-slicked alley. Everything else can come later.

A polished GUI client with colour support, scrollback, and a sensible layout. Available in most package managers (apt, dnf, pacman) or as a Flatpak/AppImage. Zero configuration needed to get started.

Windows

The other option

Same Mudlet, same simplicity — just download the .exe installer from their site and run it. Windows Defender may grumble; tell it to calm down. You'll be in the alley within five minutes.

The old warhorse. Immensely powerful, still actively used, Lua scripting built in. The UI looks like 2003 — you will learn to love it anyway.

macOS

The expensive option

Download the .dmg, drag it to Applications, right-click → Open (because Gatekeeper will be dramatic about it). Then connect and forget all of that.

Atlantis Expert Free

A Mac-native MUD client that has been around for decades and actually looks at home on macOS. Triggers, aliases, good ANSI colour support. For players who want something that feels native.
